Golf Grip Tips – The Importance Of Correct Grip

Developing proper grip can never be underestimated, so I want to share some valuable golf grip tips that I’ve learned from my years of playing, and lately, from using this amazing golfing guide.

A good golf grip is absolutely essential to being able to consistently hit the ball straight with as much distance and control as possible.  When I first started playing golf, it never occurred to me how important proper grip on the club was, or how much it could affect the way you hit the ball.

Before my first ever round of golf, I went to see my dad and he gave me a quick grip lesson.  He showed me how he held the clubs and told me I need to hold them the same way.  No pro tuition here, and although my father is a pretty good golfer himself, he only gave me enough advice to help me get started.  Not exactly the type of info that was going to help me play like Tiger.

After that first round though, I got HOOKED on golf.  What started out as a friendly round to start off a bucks night, ended up becoming a life-long obsession and determination to master this great (many times frustrating, but sometimes so rewarding) game we all love so much.  It became my quest to master my own skills, and develop the techniques that would help me play the best I can.

Well, as I’m sure you’re aware, it wasn’t an overnight success story.  In fact, my success has been years in the making – and is still an on-going process.  But, the improvement I’ve experienced and enjoyed – especially in the last few months since I started using the golf swing guide – has been amazing.

One of the things I’ve learned that has a huge impact on your ability to consistently play golf at a satisfying level, is the importance of a good grip.  Like I said earlier, proper golf grip can never be underestimated.  Its importance is so great, that ignoring the basic fundamentals of proper grip can, and does lead to many golfers experiencing years, even a lifetime of frustration and less than satisfying, mediocre results and enjoyment.

To get the best possible results, enjoyment and satisfaction from your golfing, it’s essential for you to learn and develop a good, proper grip on the clubs.  So here a few simple tips I’ve learned that can help you “get a grip.”

  • Your grip is the foundation of your swing.  It’s vitally important to keep your grip relaxed and comfortable to make your swing more effective.
  • It’s highly recommended that you work to develop a neutral grip that doesn’t require any compensation during the swing.  A good place to start is with the “orthodox position”, where the V’s of both hands (formed by the thumb and forefinger) are pointing between the chin and right shoulder (assuming you’re a right handed golfer – reversed if you’re left handed).
  • Avoid using a tight grip.  A tight grip will hinder your rhythm and release, and can negatively affect ball flight.  Relax your grip so that it feels comfortable yet still secure.
  • Different variations of grip also affect ball flight.  It’s highly recommended that you experiment with slight variations of your grip, and observe how the changes affect ball flight.  A strong grip (hands turned clockwise) encourages a hook, or right-left flight of the ball.  A weak grip (hands turned counter-clockwise) encourages a slice, or left-right flight of the ball (everything reversed for left-handers).  Use this information to help you correct your technique.
  • Remember, golf is an individual sport.  So no matter what advice you get, applying what’s best for you and your individual strengths and weaknesses is always the key to greater success and enjoyment.  I encourage you to continually test and assess your skills, and find the methods that work best for your game.  What works well for one person does NOT always work well for another.
  • It’s important to keep the grips on your clubs in good condition.  Worn, smooth grips force you to accommodate unnecessarily and grip the club too tightly – which negatively affects ball flight.
  • When I first started learning and practicing my grip, I kept a club with me at work and at home.  I would constantly practice gripping and re-gripping my club.  It’s absolutely vital to do this if you want your grip to “feel” as natural and comfortable as possible.  I’m sure though, if you are as passionate and obsessed with golf as I am,then you probably already take every opportunity you can to hold and swing your clubs, right?
  • To thoroughly ingrain correct grip technique, it’s sensible to purchase a training club.  I have heard a lot of great feedback about the Refiner Swing Trainer.  I think the link to their website is www.refinergolf.com if you are interested.

These are some of things I’ve learned over the years, that have helped me to develop my game.  I hope you can get some value out of these tips as well, and start to see some improvements in your own game.
