Save Strokes On Your Game By Playing SHORT

This is a really simple tip, but doing this WILL help you to lower your scores.

Now, lets say that you’re about 160 yards out, and you usually hit your 8 iron around 150 yards.  Most golfers would probably grab their 7 iron and say to themselves, “I’ll just ease a little bit of power off this and I’ll be right on the pin!”

I’m sure you’ve done this plenty of times right?  I know I certainly have.

The problem with this approach, is that most recreational golfers DO NOT have the ability to add or lessen power on their swings.  As a result, using the 7 iron usually puts your ball too far past the green, or to the left or right.  And more often than not, instead of playing for the pin, you now find yourself playing out of a bunker or the rough.

When you start trying to swing a little easier, or a little harder, that’s when the problems start to appear in your game.  What you should do, is focus on mastering ONE swing first.  Master the tempo, speed and power that it takes to perfect that one swing, and then play with the correct club to achieve the desired distance.

Like I just said earlier, too many recreational golfers use the incorrect club, and try to adjust their swing to accommodate for distance, and then find themselves turning a par hole into a double bogey.

So what’s the solution to this problem?  Simple …  Play SHORT!

Instead of reaching for your 7 iron and trying to ease off when you are playing out from 160 yards, just hit your 8 iron and play short.  The difference in distance between your 7 and 8 irons, is about 10 – 15 yards, so it’s best just to hit your 8 iron in the above situation every time.

Don’t try to adjust your swing, just stick with what you trust.  Hit your 8 iron 150 yards, and let the ball roll onto the green.  Your ball may end up anywhere from 2 inches to 20 feet from the pin, but at least you’re putting.

If you mishit your ball, and it goes a little further, that’s alright, you should still be in good shape because you played short to start.  And if you hit the ball short, you’ll still be alright, because more than likely, you’ll be sitting in the middle of the fairway or maybe just on the fringe.

The other benefit of playing a shorter club, is that if you go to the left or the right, it’s not going to be as far to the side as if you had hit the 7 iron.  The chances are that you will still be in pretty good shape, because more than likely, you will either be on the green, or either side of the fairway.

To summarize, when trying to decide between two clubs, it’s almost always better to take LESS club.  By doing this, you’ll keep yourself out of trouble, and THAT is the key to lowering your overall scores.
